Site de Lens

Continuous casting line

The history of our Lens site began in 1855, when Stievenard developed a business manufacturing hemp ropes for the mining industry. However, it was not until 1971 that copper casting began on the other side of the river in Salaumines. Today, the “continuous casting line” at Lens is where it all begins for cable. The smelter produces 700 tonnes of copper a day, which is used to supply the various plants where our cables are manufactured.

Our industrial legacy in Lens

Drawing copper

Our Lens site has been drawing copper since 2005.

We have a drawing capacity of 45 kT of single-core wire and 20 kT of fine wire for Class 5 cables for internal wiring installations.

Annual wire drawing capacity is 65,000 tons.

Copper recycling

In 2007, Nexans joined forces with Suez to create Recycâbles, with the aim of processing all categories of cable, from collection to shredding to finished products.

Today, Recycâbles recycles 13kT of cables a year, including 5kT of copper (2kT of which is reinjected at Lens) and 3kT of aluminum.

Recycâbles has become the leading recycler of cables and non-ferrous metals in France.
